A Public Call To Terraform Mars 
     has been made by the scientific community, and many optimistic individuals have faith that it will occur within the 21st century. Terraformation is the transformation of the environment and land into a livable and viable place for life. (How Stuff Works Explanation.)
    This is not as farfetched as you may at first believe, with the ever growing field of agriculture to feed the masses, and technology to maintain comfortable environments in an ever greater scale of buildings, we have learned to control our local environment to our own liking. We have been visiting mars since 1997 and have mapped its entire surface since. Our only next logical step, as it has been with any discovery of land is to develop it to become useful.

O² (Oxygen) What we need to breath and live.
N² (Nitrogen) A neutral gas required for agriculture and preventing over oxygenation of the air
H²O (Hydrogen Dioxide) Water

     Also a recent report states that the soil on mars carries some unique properties which would enable it to function as radiation shielding, base for extremely durable building materials, and a variety of chemicals can be derived to produce highly effective rocket fuel. As for energy sources, both wind and solar power would work exceedingly well on the Martian terrain, with high winds and a light atmosphere.

     If successful the Martian surface would likely be used for scientific research and use only, until later expansion of viable real-estate is attained it would not be likely to host a moderately large population. The abundance of materials and research opportunities make this a very attractive yet daunting task for the scientific community.
